This week I made the journey down to Borders. Not with the specific idea in mind to buy a book, though I did pick up two, but mostly to be around books. I enjoy this trip though it can take a bit out of me. Just to be there, walking the aisles, sitting in a chair reading, or considering my purchase while having a cup of tea, fills me immensely.
I’ve been looking over the contents of my bookshelves and I’ve been doing some weeding. Finding books to sell on Ebay or Amazon Marketplace. But then there are some books I could never live without…. like the ones in this photo, from a shelf in my sitting room. Memories and guides, reminders and thoughts I can’t part with.
Books and cats. You've got your priorities right.

I agree with Gael. I've taken pictures of books lately, too! Haven't gotten around to uploading them yet... :)

I weeded books this past year--several xerox boxes full went to the local Friends of the Library--and I often buy books there in return. I didn't realize Borders was in Europe, too. Like McDonalds, I guess.

I love The Name of the Rose.
p.s. If anyone likes taking pictures of portraits of small objects with landscapes and portraits depicted on them would they mind uploading them onto my homepage?

I have the Neruda anthology and Isabel Allende's "Paula". That is an incredibly satisfying image, Susanne.

I love your phrase that Borders "fills you immensely". I feel exactly the same way when I go there. I think it is the smell of the coffee, the quiet, and all those wonderful rows of books waiting to be read.

I see a couple of Annie Dillard's books there. A blogging friend pointed me in her direction just the other day, and I have The Annie Dillard Reader (an anthology) on my bedside table -- looking forward to it.

Yeah, I can part with much fiction more than I can reference stuff. I have maps, for example, which I may never use and are probably outdated now and that just makes them even more interesting and important. Memories I have not had.

I am not going to mention books. I am only going to extol how your writing addresses everyday ocassions and brings out the wonder in them. As ever, never afraid to use minimun words to convey meaning with ultimate effect :-)

The books on people's shelves are always a fascinating insight into their characters. Thanks for the glimpse of yours. I don't think I've read any of these books but I'm intrigued as they appear to have a gentle, soulful feel to them and I suspect I'd find a gem or two amongst them. If it's not to much to ask, could you print out a list of the titles as I'm looking for a new direction in my reading and I think I may just have found it.

Nice idea, photographing a corner of one's bookshelves. But which corner? I might have a go.
BTW, selling surplus books on Ebay, does it work? Can you let me know by email? I've never participated in the Ebay thing and know very little about it.
Thanks.
